Zapier and Make overage costs

Short answer: Zapier keeps running on pay-per-task up to 3× your task limit; Make auto-buys 10,000-credit packs at +25%, up to your plan's credit count.

RunCost saves you the maths: enter your steps and runs in the calculator and see the cheapest tool in seconds.

The trap: both tools keep running past your plan by default or with one toggle, and both charge more per unit for the extra usage.

Zapier: pay-per-task, capped at 3x

"If you exceed your plan's task limit, you'll automatically switch to pay-per-task billing for the remainder of your pay period… Your pay-per-task rate depends on your plan and billing cycle type. Check your Billing settings for the exact rate."
"Zap workflows will stop running if your account reaches the maximum pay-per-task usage amount. This is set at 3 times your plan's task limit… Professional 750 plan… 750 tasks + 1500 tasks = 2250 tasks."

It's on by default for accounts that joined after January 2024. Zapier's plan-change announcement described the rate as "1.25x the cost of a task on your plan", but the current help page says to check your billing settings, so treat 1.25x as unverified for your account.

Make: extra credits at +25%

"When you use all of the credits in your subscription, Make automatically purchases 10,000 extra credits… Make limits auto-purchasing to the number of credits in your subscription."
"All extra credits include a 25% additional cost, whether you purchase them manually or through auto-purchasing."

Since 6 November 2025 manual and automatic purchases both cost +25% (automatic used to be +30%). Auto-purchasing is for Core, Pro and Teams, and card payments only.

Worked example

Make Core 10k ($9.00/mo annual): Make's own example is that one credit costs $0.0009, so 10,000 extra credits cost $11.25. Your bill for a month at 20,000 credits is $20.25, and auto-purchase stops there because the cap equals your plan's 10,000 credits.

Zapier Professional 750: the maximum is 2,250 tasks a month (750 included + 1,500 pay-per-task). Under the 1.25x rate from Zapier's announcement, each extra task on the $19.99 annual plan would be about $0.03, but check your own rate in Billing settings.

FAQ

What happens when I go over my Zapier task limit?

On paid plans with pay-per-task billing (on by default since January 2024), Zaps keep running and extra tasks are billed for the rest of the period, up to 3 times your plan’s task limit. After that, runs are held.

What is Zapier’s 3x cap?

Total usage, including included and pay-per-task tasks, can reach 3 times your plan’s task limit. A 750-task plan tops out at 2,250 tasks.

How much do Make extra credits cost?

Extra credits cost 25% more than the credits in your plan, whether bought manually or automatically. On the $9 Core plan, 10,000 extra credits cost $11.25.

How many times will Make auto-purchase credits?

Up to the number of credits in your subscription, in 10,000-credit units. An 80,000-credit plan auto-purchases at most 8 times.

Can I turn overage billing off?

Yes. Zapier lets the account owner turn off pay-per-task in Billing settings. Make’s auto-purchase is a toggle under Org > My Plan > Subscription.
